2001-2005

And so to the last decade. Barely ten years on from the first Gulf War, the British Army was – and still is – embroiled in the arftermath of a second conflict in Iraq.

The September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon changed our world and the direction of our vigilance. Already largely redefined from its Cold War postures, the British Army is now sleeker, meaner, more versatile, better equipped and focused on the realities of the 21st century.

New names in the lexicon of British intervention during the decade include Sierra Leone, the Congo and Rwanda. Old Cold War enemies are being trained as allies in the war on terror.
