Beverley Craven Live – The Haymarket in Basingstoke
BRITISH-born Beverley Craven is probably best known for her 1991 hit Promise Me from her first, self-titled album of the same year. Her career has spanned two decades and taken in four albums - including her latest release Close to Home (available only through her web site).
Introduced by her band in the intimate Haymarket venue, she arrived on stage slightly early before launching into some of her better known hits such as Woman to Woman, Love is the Light and Love Scenes, as well as songs from her new album. Speaking frankly about her feelings at the time before launching into her songs, she often appeared to be pensive and tearful. Her backing band, Fergus Gerrand (drums), Ralph Samins (bass), Gary Sanctuary (additional keyboard) and Frank Mead (saxophone) were fantastic - particularly the great showman that is Frank Mead. Often I felt I was simply privy to a jamming session between high-calibre musicians. A fantastic night and highly recommended.
